The Highest Rated Books I Have Read

The purpose of this post is really to discover if I agree with the popular opinion or not – that is to say, have I also rated the well-loved books highly? To do this, I basically went to my Goodreads shelf of ‘read’ books, and sorted them according to average rating. I’m looking at the top five, and I thought I would be somewhat interesting share my thoughts on some of these books here. Obviously I’m not including unreleased books with extremely high ratings that haven’t actually been read by anyone – people just like to rate things before they read them for some reason? But these are books with a reasonable number of ratings that have been generally loved by the online book community.

5: The fifth highest rated book that I have read is….Crooked Kingdom! I’m not really surprised by this one, to be honest. The Six of Crows duology is incredibly well loved by many, many people. And surprise! I love it too. It’s just such a well-crafted book, and Leigh Bardugo is an incredible author. Her writing creates such vivid images, and while heist stories may not be my favourite, this one is certainly an exception. I think Crooked Kingdom is a fantastic book, and is so deserving of it’s high rating.

4: Coming in at number four is Heartstopper Volume 2. Honestly I don’t think I have ever seen someone actively dislike this graphic novel series. I don’t think it’s actually possible to dislike it. This series is just so wholesome while still being real and relevant, the characters are great and the art style is so beautiful. I really love Alice Oseman’s books and her graphic novels are no exception. I don’t think a graphic novel is ever going to be something I purely love with all my heart, as its just not my favourite format, but this is one of the best ones out there.

3: I’m not at all surprised to see this book on here. I acknowledge now that Sarah J Maas’ books have problems, but they used to be my favourite books, and they still mean a lot to me. Its also undeniable that Sarah’s books are always well written, and she has this way of creating characters which feel so real and vibrant and that you can’t help but love. This is still an amazing book, in my opinion, and I do agree with the high rating.

2: The second highest rated book on my shelf is another Heartstopper Volume! I love this one a bit more than the second volume, actually. But it’s not really something that you can rate lowly, as its just a really feel good book, despite the fact that it does deal with some heavier topics. Again, i do really enjoy this series, and I give them high ratings, but as a graphic novel, they are never going to be all time favourites of mine. That being said, this definitely deserves recognition and praise, so I think the high rating is valid.

1: The highest rated book on my Goodreads shelf is actually the Good Omens script book. I love the TV show and the actual book a lot – its probably one of my favourite shows ever, actually. I really love this script book, but honestly, this is definitely aimed at people who like the show, and if you like the show, you are most likely going to like this, because it’s basically the show, but in book form. So while the high rating is definitely deserved (I love the show so so so so much), it’s not really something that people are reading objectively and criticising.

I think this proves that I am very basic and generally agree with the rest of the world. I scrolled further down through my Goodreads after writing this post and saw that practically every highly rated book, I have also loved. I stand by all these ratings though, as all these books are genuinely incredible. I think it is interesting though to see if you are someone who tends to follow the crowd, or whether your opinion differs – either way, it’s completely valid.

Do you tend to agree with the popular opinion? What is the most highly rated book you have read? And do you agree with me that these books are worth the hype?
